Ann Shurtz

Piano

Ann Dotter Shurtz loves developing musical ability, intelligence, character, discipline, and self-confidence in children, and strengthening love and mutual respect between parents and their children through the study of music.  Her favorite quotes from Dr. Suzuki is “where love is deep, much can be accomplished.” She is the current president of CPSA and has been the music director of the annual CAPC concerts for about 20 years. Ann graduated from Oklahoma City University, summa cum laude, in biology and music; earned a Master of Music degree from the University of Oklahoma; and continued post-graduate work at Brigham Young University. She continued to study music at the Aspen School of Music, the Dorothy Taubman Institute, Suzuki piano pedagogy institutes and the Voice Care Institute. She studied piano from age 10 through college with Nancy Apgar, M.M. from Eastman. Recently she studied with Gloria Whitney, concert pianist with the Eaken Piano Trio. She is registered in all Suzuki Piano books, overview units and Practicum with the Suzuki Association of the Americas. Mrs. Shurtz taught music theory at the University of Oklahoma and BYU for four years and has conducted choirs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for many years. She maintains an active piano studio of about 50 students, and has taught piano for over 40 years. Her students play in the National Guild Auditions, where many have earned medals, High School Diplomas, and Five- and Ten-year National pins. Her four daughters each studied two instruments with the Suzuki method and she now teaches piano to four of her grandchildren.
